NIMES AND THE CLASSICAL
15 The Vitruvian Stallion
Even though the Roman Empire eventually came to an end, there's no doubt that ancient Rome has made a great impact in western civilization and in the history of western art. Ancient Rome has also played important role in the work and lives of artists. That's why I chose this original rough sketch of a classical "Vitruvian Stallion". As you can see, this work on paper lead to a painting on canvas.
Recently I had spent a month traveling through Italy, visiting Rome, the Amalfi Coast, Tuscany, and Venice, enjoying classical Italian art and architecture. So when I returned to my studio in America, it was only natural that this quick sketch of a Vitruvian Stallion came out of me, as if by osmosis. Here I include both the sketch and oil painting in a private scene from my home.
One of the things about the global pandemic is that it has allowed me to learn how to bake my own Tuscan bread. That is why I'm exhibiting my completed Vitruvian Stallion painting at the dinner table, connecting these ideas in a way that is very personal to me.
