Mexico is rich in history, art, and culture.  The word "Mexcla" comes from the Spanish language and culture  and means Mixture.  Mexican art is known for having very deep, saturated colors and even textures, reflecting its diverse history that is forever mixed and intertwined with the Spanish who came from Europe into the territory of the Americas.  So to be Mexican is be both American and European.  Much like most indigenous cultures around the world, Mexican culture has deep spiritual connections to the earth.  It's well known the Aztecs and the Mayans had advanced knowledge of astrology, the cycles of the sun, and the planets, which they used for determining the starts of seasons and knowing when to plant their crops.  One of these crops was maize, which today we know as corn.  I have made sure that I included tortillas in the exhibit to represent the corn.

 

Representing Mexican art, this is my painting representing "The Mexican".  Notice the vibrant skin tones and textures reflecting both a primitive and a spiritual culture.  One eye is closed representing the spiritual world of the inner self of an indigenous Latin American.  And because he is a both a mixture of American and European ancestry, it is also painted in an Expressionist Style from my time living in Europe.
