EXPRESSIVE WORKS
18 In My Armor
This continues the theme of warriors and their armor but this time I show it in my expressive style of art. I'm also using this work to depict a truth. Just like a warrior, it takes a tremendous amount of COURAGE to be an artist!!!
Honestly, it's no wonder that so few artists survive, let alone succeed.... Even though my nature is very "sensitive", this expressive work on paper shows how I often have to wear a layer of armor as protection to deal with the harsh realities of the art world.
This drawing depicts a psychological portrait of myself being guarded in a suit of armor with a juxtaposition of a Roman Helmet used as inspiration in the American in Paris Gallery. This expressive drawing conveys the irony of being guarded while maintaining and sharing the inner child that lives deep within every artist. This work on paper also conveys the irony of protecting my inner child and sense of humor and expressing it with panache in a "tongue in cheek" kind of way.
Nonetheless, even while being whimsical and expressive, the armor is deeply serious and psychological! That's why my drawing represents the way in which I often have to wear a suit of psychological armor to protect myself from all the criticism when taking creative risks and exposing myself and my image as a creative artist to the world. In the art world, I often have to wear many hats to succeed in the world of art! My suit of armor reflects how I shield myself from cruelty. For this reason, this work is titled "In My Armor".
