The Real Can Can Dancer
(Combining Realism and Post Impressionist)
Prior to Florence, here is an example of my painting applying a "realistic" technique, as seen in the face. This painting still makes me smile because I created a realistic face while also totally embracing the color and childhood boldness of Post Impressionism from the influence of my time living in Paris. It embraces both styles of art.. With the exception of the hair, the painting "looks" very academic and yet it is it is 100% "unapologetic" about it! However, each time an artist takes a risk it does not come without consequences! I've been criticized to death and called a "cartoon artist." That's not an insult. What's wrong with being a cartoon artist? This painting makes me smile and I can't look at it without feeling "happy" inside. It still has this affect on me. I won't sell it because this painting makes me happy and my happiness is not for sale! Besides, there's a place for all types of artists in the art world, including cartoon artists. Nonetheless, this is just to show an example of how far I got in terms of teaching myself realism and how I was painting prior to moving to Florence, Italy and officially getting "classical training" in the the city revered by "academic realists". The Italian Renaissance method is already showing up in my art studio and it has changed the way I am now creating works of art.
