The Ear

"The Ear - Preliminary Study"
Graphite
Classical Anatomy Study
Being an artist is very challenging. So I am always working on improving my skills. For example. Painting an ear was fun and easy for me as an expressionist. Painting the complexities of the human ear in the classical tradition of the Italian Renaissance is completely different matter, however... On a difference league! It requires discipline and serious technical skills. Here we have the imprimatura (first paint layer) from my drawing to painting on board. This painting is now heading into the "Grisaille," which means the underpainting that separates my darks from my lights and begins to give form.

Underpainting on Board
Painting in the traditional method of the classic Italian masters from the Renaissance.
